5 New Year’s Resolutions for a Healthy Smile
December 23, 2021
At the end of every year, people begin to think about what they want to accomplish over the next 365 days. Maybe they want to check out more of the local restaurant scene. Or maybe they’re interested in taking more road trips. With so many potential resolutions, have you ever considered making one revolving around your oral health? Read on for five ideas for New Year’s resolutions that will help you achieve a healthy smile.
#1: Visit the Dentist
It’s generally recommended to visit the dentist every six months for checkups and cleanings. This will allow your dentist to remove build-ups of plaque and tartar as well as to do a thorough examination to ensure that there aren’t any oral health issues that need to be addressed. Make a point of attending these appointments to keep your oral health in check and avoid spending tons of money in the future on restorative treatments.
#2: Do a Better Job of Brushing and Flossing
Make sure to brush your teeth once in the morning and once before bed. When brushing your teeth, make sure to use a soft-bristled toothbrush to avoid scratching the enamel and fluoride toothpaste to help strengthen your pearly whites. Additionally, floss at least once per day to remove 40% of plaque from your teeth and to keep cavities from developing between your pearly whites.
#3: Conquer Dry Mouth
Drink plenty of water, chew sugar-free gum, eat sugar-free hard candy, or munch on fresh, crisp fruits and veggies like apples and carrots to keep dry mouth at bay. This will help prevent issues like cavities and gum disease by keeping the mouth moist and washing away food particles and harmful oral bacteria. Additionally, speak with your dentist to ensure that there aren’t any underlying oral health issues that are causing the dryness.
#4: Cut Out Tobacco
Smoking cigarettes can do a lot of harm to your body, including your oral health. It can cause dry mouth, gum disease, and even oral cancer. Cut tobacco products out to lessen your chances of developing these issues. If you need help quitting, ask your dentist or doctor for resources.
#5: Brighten Your Smile
Cut back on coffee, dark sodas, and other highly pigmented foods and beverages to lessen their chances of staining your smile. Additionally, speak with your dentist about the options they have available to brighten your smile or cover up discoloration.
If you think it’s too late to start taking better care of your smile, it’s better late than never! With the above resolutions and a little extra effort, you’ll be sporting a smile you’re proud to show off to the world by next New Year’s Eve!
