Ace Your Oral Health Exams This Semester
August 26, 2024
The lazy days of summer are almost over once again, and that can only mean one thing: it’s time to head back to school. Between memorizing new bus routes, handing in homework, and being a good sport about a new season of athletics, the activities that return each fall can sometimes be very overwhelming. But don’t let your family’s new schedule interfere with their oral health. Here are some tips to help your kids “brush up” on their oral health and get an A+ at their next dental exam!
Pack it Up
This fall when you pack your child’s backpack, be sure to include a few items to protect their teeth while they’re not at home. Consider a small dental kit of essentials that they can keep in their backpack, and include items such as:
- Toothbrush
- Travel-sized toothpaste
- Floss
If they have braces, a care kit should also include:
- Braces brushes
- Floss threaders
- Dental wax
For Clear Aligners
- Aligner removal tool
- Aligner storage case
Keep it Safe
Does your child play sports? If you’ve got an athlete or a rough-houser on your hands, don’t forget to send them off to school and sporting events with their mouthguard!
Smart Snacking
If you want your kids to eat healthy, then it’s important to provide them with smart options. Remember, you aren’t just giving them a snack, you are also teaching them how to make educated dietary choices on their own. Consider including the following delicious options:
- Fresh fruit and vegetables
- Sandwiches made with lean protein and whole grain breads
- Nuts and seeds (if allowed)
- Dairy products such as cheese and yogurt
- A reusable water bottle
Get Back on Track
If you have been letting things like oral hygiene slide during the summer break, it’s time to get back on a proper schedule. Make sure the kids are brushing their teeth before school and before bed, and that they are flossing at least once a day as well. If you find that they are struggling to fit this step into their new routine, consider setting an alarm or scheduling their bedtime a little earlier.
Ace Your Exams
Finally, don’t forget to ace your exam at the dentist’s office. Be sure to schedule your semi-annual check-up and cleaning before the beginning of the new semester. This way, your child won’t need to miss school for it, and if your dentist does find any problems they can be addressed before they take away valuable instructional time.
Remember, it’s normal to be a little overwhelmed this time of year, but the good news is that with a little planning there’s no need for your smile to get a failing grade. Try these practical tips for maintaining your oral health routine this fall, and you’ll have plenty of reasons to smile this school year!
